Detached House, Holthausen, Germany

The brief for this project was to design a detached three bedroom family home for a private client in a rural village in mid-west Germany. The house is situated on a sloping site and comprises three floors with a separate one bed apartment in the basement and a double garage with workshop below to the side of the house. Local planning restrictions require the building to fit in with the architectural character of the region and limit the choice of external materials to a small palette consisting of either timber framed walls with black painted framing and white rendered in-fills or plain white rendered elevations. Roofing materials should either be slate or black clay tiles. In this case white render for the elevations and black roof tiles were chosen, which cover the main double pitched roof intersecting with a subordinate street facing gable. Planning permission was received in August 2013 and construction started immediately.
